JLG is investing in augmented reality for equipment demonstration with introduction of an augmented reality (AR) equipment simulation app allowing users to bring digital aspects of JLG equipment into the real world. The app enables customers and equipment demonstrators to use access equipment in any working environment and at any working height without having to bring physical equipment on site.
Neil Doherty, JLG’s principal engineer at JLG EMEA and lead developer for AR and BIM, said: “Equipment demonstrations are a valuable part of a purchasing decision for SME companies (1-49 employees). However, these are time consuming, require logistic planning and add to the total cost of sale. By using the AR app, a customer can now share a similar level of experience and have the freedom to explore the equipment at their own pace and leisure. When tested, our sales managers and equipment demonstrators experienced improved efficiency during their working hours and were more effective as they could focus on the more complex side of the business, without having to be concerned about customer engagement and the logistics of site-demonstrations.”
Another technology that will be demonstrated is a mobile control app on the R-Series scissors. The app allows operators to control equipment remotely, pairing any smart phone with the scissor via a QR code and Bluetooth. The mobile control app helps operators maneuver equipment in tight spaces, through doors and during loading and offloading for transport, avoiding potential hazardous situations. The operator can be anywhere around the machine without being restricted by the controls.
JLG will introduce a full electric range of construction booms which offer similar lift speeds and platform capacities as their conventional diesel counterparts. Available in three models – 340AJ, 450AJ and 520AJ – these boom lifts offer working heights from 12m to 18m and an unrestricted platform capacity of 250kgs. The range is equipped with Lithium batteries and 2-wheel drive as standard.
The manufacturer has announced the release of the SkyGuard SkyEye control panel protection system as an option on boom lifts. This system uses sensors to register operation in the platform. If the operator breaks the connection between the sensors positioned on each side of the operator platform, the system stops all boom lift functions, then momentarily reverses or undoes most functions that were in use when the system was activated. Another notification feature is JLG’s enhanced detection system (EDS), which uses strategically placed object detection sensors to detect obstacles in the surrounding environment. Audible and visual warning signals are triggered if and when the machine is getting close to an obstacle. If the operator platform gets too close to an obstacle, the device automatically stops the machine. JLG’s EDS will be ready in March 2019.
