JLG Industries showcased a full electric range of construction booms at bauma 2019. Available in three models – 340AJ, 450AJ and 520AJ – these boom lifts offer working heights from 12m to 18m and an unrestricted platform capacity of 250kg. The range is equipped with Lithium batteries and 2-wheel drive as standard.
The electric 340AJ, 450AJ and 520AJ offer similar lift speeds and platform capacities as their conventional diesel counterparts. Equipped with 2-wheel drive, the range provides good terrain capability in semi-rough terrain. Maintenance and parts requirements are limited, which is a benefit of electric drive over conventional diesel, i.e. no filter replacements or engine maintenance is needed.
Jan-Willem van Wier, senior product marketing manager for JLG access equipment in EMEA, said: “JLG is investing in the continued development of more environmentally friendly access equipment. The market is now ready for full electric construction boom lifts. Working on urban job sites where noise levels and stringent emission standards apply, this range provides an alternative for conventional combustion operated equipment.”

JLG is making the transition to a new style of enhanced control panel protection. The new SkyGuard SkyLine maintains the same exclusive SkyGuard reversing technology as the legacy bar style. SkyGuard technology stops all functions in use at the time, then momentarily reverses the function or functions that were in use at the time of activation. The SkyGuard SkyLine provides additional features such as a wire rope-style design, which attaches with a magnet; greater visibility of the control panel; activation when force applied to the cable causes the magnet to detach; no breakaway features that require replacement. Customers purchasing new machines will have the option to purchase the SkyGuard SkyBar, a bar-style SkyGuard system.
JLG also released the SkyGuard SkyEye enhanced control panel protection system as an option on boom lifts. This optional safety innovation uses sensors to register operation in the platform. If the operator breaks the connection between the sensors positioned on each side of the operator platform, the system stops all boom lift functions, then momentarily reverses or undoes most functions that were in use when the system was activated. The reverse functionality is the only feature of its kind in the market.

Another notification feature, the SkySense enhanced detection system, uses strategically placed object detection sensors to detect obstacles in the surrounding environment. Audible and visual warning signals are triggered if and when the machine is getting close to an obstacle. If the operator platform gets too close to an obstacle, the device automatically stops the machine. JLG’s SkySense is available as a retrofit option and on new machines.
