Reacton Fire Suppression is the first and only company in the world to achieve the prestigious P-Mark SPCR 199 standard for fire suppression in the engine compartments of heavy equipment vehicles, awarded by the Research Institutes of Sweden (RISE), the leading vehicle accreditation safety body.

To achieve the P-Mark according to SPCR 199, a system must go through a series of rigorous tests and pass criteria set out in both Certification Rules SPCR 199 and the test method SP method 4912. All fire tests are carried out in a test enclosure where the fire-fighting performance of different suppression systems can be evaluated in a well-defined and objective way. 

The test method includes realistic airflows and relevant fire scenarios. In addition, the test method is repeatable and reproducible, and it includes testing of re-ignition due to fuel spray of flammable liquid onto hot surfaces. The test is adaptable to simulate the suppression challenges of less enclosed engine compartments and can be without floor, ceiling or walls. It also has much improved re-ignition protection.

There are 10 fire tests and a separate hot surface re-ignition test. Each of these tests vary in difficulty and have their own rating system.

In achieving the P-Mark SPCR 199, Reacton’s fire suppression system scored the A+ rating throughout RISE’s rigorous test regime, which included demonstrating the following:

  • The suppression system has been fire tested in a well-defined controlled environment in an objective way, providing realistic and repeatable fire hazards.
  • Thorough component testing to international standards in independent accredited testing laboratories. These mechanical resistance tests cover thermal cycling, vibration resistance, mechanical shock, corrosion resistance and ingress protection.
  • Robust fire risk assessment documentation is carried out on each vehicle type before design and installation of the fire suppression system.
  • Full review of design, installation, operation and maintenance manuals.
  • The fire suppression manufacturer’s design of systems, production and installation control is reviewed by independent approved third-party auditors as part of the overall quality assurance.
  • Reduction in the loss of lives and vehicles.
  • Business continuity.

A minimum rating of 7 is required to pass the fire suppression performance part of the approval. This means that you can achieve a certificate without having to pass all the tests. For Reacton, this is not an option; we do not expect our clients to install a system that cannot pass all of the fire tests available. All Reacton fire suppression systems have the P-Mark approval with 10/10 or A+ ratings.
