Caterpillar has announced the expansion of its industrial engine range with the launch of the new Cat C13B.

In a statement, the manufacturer revealed that the 6-cylinder, 12.5-litre engine boasts more than 68 million hours of field experience, as well as technology that is complementary to the company’s C9.3B platform, which was launched in 2016 and is nearing production.

The new product is designed to meet EU Stage V and the US EPA’s Tier 4 Final emissions standards, and combines upgraded air, electrical, and aftertreatment systems to produce 340 kW to 430kW of power and up to 2640 Nm of torque, according to Caterpillar.

The company added that the engine is 30% lighter compared to previous models that perform at these levels.

Jeff Moore, product manager for 7.2-litre to 18-litre engines, commented: “Our customers expect reliability and durability, but they need it from a simpler, lighter package with more power, and that’s what we’re giving them with our new engines.”

Caterpillar said that the C13B’s transparent aftertreatment regeneration maximises uptime, while improvements in fuel consumption minimises cost of ownership.

OEM customers can also look forward to reduced installation costs, Cat added, explaining that the engine will be offered in different configurations.

Caterpillar will be offering engine-mounted afterteatment (EMAT) and full industrial power unit (IPU) configurations out of its factory in Seguin, Texas, USA.

Remote-mounted aftertreatment is also possible, with minimal installation requirements between the engine and aftertreatment.

Caterpillar further revealed that it will also certify its existing Stage IV, Tier 4 Final engines in its C13, C15, and C18 product range to meet Stage V emission standards.

Meanwhile, dual label certification for Stage V and Tier 4 Final will be offered for its range of 9 -litre to 18-litre products, from 250kW to 597 kW.

The company emphasised that no changes have been made to customer interface points for existing products to allow for a seamless changeover and enable customers to focus on their own product improvements.

“The C13B and all Cat industrial engines are designed with the customer in mind. We meet emission standards while delivering increased power density, fuel efficiency, and reduced complexity to add real value for our customers,” added Moore.
